Ductless Mini-splits are cooling and heating systems that will allow you to control the temperature in an individual space. They would not be able to maintain the temperature in an entire structure but they are an energy efficient way to handle smaller areas.
These systems have two mamor components -- an indoor air handler unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser. Due to the lack of ducting these systems are significantly less difficult to install as compared to a whole house system. The mini-splits do require a three inch hole to be cut through the exterior wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units. The conduit hole houses the communication and power cables, condensation line, and copper tubing.
These systems can also be a good choice for room additions where trying to add ductwork would be a royal pain and also for energy efficient homes that require only a small system.
